How should a startup balance patents and trade secrets when protecting intellectual property for a health-related product?

Hi,
I usually tell founders that obsessing over IP is a complete waste of time. But you're in the health space, and that's one of the few areas where the rules actually change.
If you've spent years iterating and testing hundreds of ingredients to find the exact formula that works, you absolutely want to protect those results. But here is the trade-off. A patent gives you a legal monopoly, but you have to publish your recipe for the world to see. A trade secret keeps it hidden, but if someone reverse-engineers your formula, you're out of luck.
My advice? Patent the highly specific, iterated formula that you've proven actually works. But keep your manufacturing processes or specific sourcing as trade secrets.
Just don't let the legal paperwork stall you. The real protection isn't the patent—it's being first to market and building a brand people trust.
